Whipped Coffee (Dalgona Coffee) Five Ways

Whipped Coffee

Sharing is caring!

My take on the whipped coffee craze taking over the internet!

A friend of mine called me last week and asked, “Have you tried that whipped coffee that’s everywhere online lately?” (Thanks Triston!)

She was referring to Dalgona Coffee, a whipped coffee concoction made with the simplest ingredients. I had seen photos on Instagram of this interesting looking drink but hadn’t tried it yet.

The ingredients are simply: instant coffee, sugar, hot water, and milk.

I didn’t have any instant coffee on hand because I’m not really big on it unless I’m camping. (It will now be a staple for me!)

Unfortunately, since we are all going through the craziness of Covid-19 and being housebound, I couldn’t just run to the store to grab some.

So, I ordered some with my Aldi delivery order a few days later, and that’s when the fun began!

Where did (Whipped Coffee) Dalgona Coffee Originate?

I’ve been looking all over the online world to see what exactly I could find out about Whipped Coffee.

I found out from Goodhousekeeping.com that this coffee treat is called Dalgona Coffee, named after a popular Korean sugar sponge candy, Dalgona.

According to Microsoft Lifestyle, the origins of this creamy coffee can be traced back to Pakistan, India and Macau.

In January of this year, a Korean tv show featured an actor named Jung Il-Woo who tried this whipped coffee in Macau, and it reminded him of the Korean candy, so he started calling it Dalgona Coffee.

After the show aired, Tik Tok and other social media users started posting videos of themselves making and trying the drink.

Of course, I had to get in on the action. And since I’m not hip enough to have a Tik Tok (is hip a word these days?), and I haven’t gotten comfortable enough showing my face on Youtube, I figured I would just document my experience here!

Is Whipped Coffee Really As Easy To Make As They Claim?

Yes. Yes it is.

The first time I made whipped coffee, I used a whisk and mixed it up by hand. And even doing that, it didn’t take long at all!

My second time (because I wanted to try out different techniques), I used my Kitchen Aide stand mixer and it was even faster.

Since then, each time I’ve made it I have been using my Koios Hand Immersion Blender, which is super convenient with easy cleanup.

In total, it might take 3-5 minutes to prepare the drink.

How Do you Make Whipped Coffee?

The directions for making whipped coffee couldn’t be easier. The basic recipe (for 2) is: (follow these instructions for all recipes)

Whipped Coffee

2 TBS Instant Coffee

2 TBS Granulated Sugar

2 TBS Boiling Water

Ice Cubes

Milk

Put all ingredients into a bowl, and whisk until aerated and fluffy. Like This:

Put a few ice cubes and some cold milk into a glass cup, and scoop half of the coffee mixture onto the top. Take a cute pic for Instagram, then mix it up and enjoy!

Experiment With Flavors

My first taste of Whipped Coffee was using the basic recipe above. After that, I decided to mix things up a little and try some different ingredients.

Here are four more ways I made my Whipped Coffee

Dalgona Coffee With an Irish Twist

Irish Cream Dalgona Coffee

2 TBS Instant Coffee

3 TBS Granulated Sugar (thought I’d try it a little sweeter.)

2 TBS Boiling Water

Ice Cubes

Milk

Irish Cream (Yum!)

Add a splash (or 3) of Irish cream to your milk and ice cubes, scoop the whipped coffee on top, and enjoy!

Chocolate Whipped Coffee

Chocolate Milk Dalgona Coffee

2 TBS Instant Coffee

2 TBS Granulated Sugar

2 TBS Boiling Water

Ice Cubes

Chocolate Milk (Mmmmmm)

Cinnamon Dalgona Coffee ( I cut the ingredients down for just me)

Cinnamon Whipped Coffee

1 TBS Instant Coffee

2 TBS Granulated Sugar

1/2 TSP Cinnamon

1 TBS Boiling Water

Milk

Ice Cubes

Vanilla Whipped Coffee

Vanilla Whipped Coffee

1 TBS Instant Coffee

2 TBS Granulated Sugar

1 1/2 TSP Vanilla Extract

1 TBS Boiling Water

Milk

Ice Cubes

I added 1/2 tsp of the Vanilla extract to the whipped mixture and 1 tsp to the milk.

Of all of these different ways to make Whipped Coffee, the addition of Cinnamon has been my favorite. It gives it a deeper flavor and blends perfectly with the creaminess of the milk.

Bonus: Hot Whipped Coffee

This morning I started making a pot of coffee and, to my horror, my husband left an empty coffee container for me!

I was scrambling because I needed my morning coffee fix if I planned to make it through the day.

Since I am not big on cold coffee in the morning- there’s just something about a hot cup in the morning- I decided to see how this whipped coffee tastes hot. To my surprise, it was delicious! Here’s how I made it:

2 tbs Instant Coffee

2 tbs sugar

2 tbs hot water

Milk

Vanilla extract

Cinnamon

Whip up the instant coffee mixture as usual. Pour milk into saucepan, add vanilla extract and cinnamon, and heat until it’s at your desired temperature.

Pour hot milk into cup, add whip to the top, and mix together to get this frothy goodness!
